Fucking hell. I’ve had a year to do something with this and I’ve done nothing. Now 2020 was shit and I was brain fried for a lot of it but really? Ah well, never look back they say.
But that what I’m here to do, this is just me dusting off the site for my end of year write up. This was originally posted of the Drowned in Sound music forum (https://community.drownedinsound.com/)and the Thrash it out Facebook page https://thrashitoutpodcast.com/ I’ll be expanding on the entries if they made the full top 12 list.
Garganjua
Post metal, huge riffs with a good melodic side. There’s a nice trade off between the clean and harsh vocals.

Loathe
The best Deftones album released this year was by this Liverpool band. Derivative but does what the Deftones do so well, just with hardcore instead of metal

Huntsmen
Sci-Fi, prog, post metal double album.
Despite how that sounds this is a fantastic album that will keep your attention over it’s (very) long running time.

Envy
Japanese post hardcore. Their best album in years, possibly their best. Fantastic mix of heavy and very pretty music.

Panzerfaust
Stunning death metal with black touches. Far more melodic that this sort of music normally is.

(0)
More blackened death metal and again far more melodic than I’d expect from this kind of music

Telepathy
Some old fashioned, heavy as hell, instrumental post metal.

Iress
Similar Emma Ruth Rundel and A.A WIlliams but more metal. Understated but great stuff.

Palm Reader
PR calmed their hardcore sound down, this is a much slower and controlled album than their earlier work but it’s still intense and heavy. Melodic and catchy in places it still punches when they need to.

Dawnwalker.
This feels like a cheat as it’s only been out a week but I love it.
Blackened, prog, folk, post metal, it’s an epic concept album combining the light and dark of the genre perfectly. (I’ve closed my eyes and am pretending very hard that it has nothing to do with Tolkien 😀 )
