Star Trek at 50

(This is an old post from my tumblr , I’m just adding content to see how all this works.)

As some of you will know, today is the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, now there is going to be a lot written about it over the next few days so I thought I’d add my bit.
There’s a lot of arguing in the fandom about which show is best, TOS, TNG, which film sucks, is Trek better or worse that Star Wars, it goes on and on but, frankly who cares.
I remember watching TOS on the black and white tv we used to have in the sitting room of our house and loving it. It was space stuff and I loved the hell out of anything space (I’m a little more discerning now, but only a little 😀 ) Later I came to realise that as a 10 year old I could explain things like parallel universes because of ST and to be honest, i think that’s a hell of a thing.

I came to watch TNG a lot later, starting around mid season 3 for some reason, but from there on I was hooked. The first lecture I ever skipped at Uni was because my flatmates and I stayed up all night watching the last 5 eps of TNG. All good things is still one of the best endings to a series I’ve seen.
It has always been a part of my life, but not a defining one. I was never a Trekker but I’ve always had a place in my heart for it. (Not Voyager though. Fuck that show, it was rubbish 😛 )
I loved ST: Beyond this year and am so looking forward to seeing what Brian Fuller has for us with Start Trek: Discovery, it’s looking like a good time to be a fan again.
I thought to celebrate, I’d post a scene from one of my favourite films, a scene that I think is easily one of cinema’s most iconic, I tear up every time.
To another 50 years.
